Visitors will find plenty of activities going on in Newberry, South Carolina this fall. As the weather cools off and the leaves begin to change, this historic college town in the center of the state offers lots of events on upcoming fall weekends. An agricultural expo, Oktoberfest celebration, and Newberry College homecoming are some of the special happenings that will bring visitors to town.

The Newberry County Agricultural Expo is scheduled for September 27-29 at the Newberry County Fairgrounds. Newberry’s version of a county fair highlights the agricultural industry in Newberry County. The annual event will feature livestock and horse shows, an exhibition of antique tractors and other farm equipment, and the South Carolina High School Rodeo. Other activities will include an art show, craft vendors, and a parade through downtown Newberry at 10am on Saturday. A beauty pageant held in conjunction with the expo is scheduled for September 16.

The 12th Annual Newberry Oktoberfest will be held in downtown Newberry on October 6. The free festival will feature a biergarten and food court with lots of traditional German food. Locals will compete in a liver nips contest, serving up an unusual German dish made with liver and dumplings. Live entertainment will include the 3 Dot Polka Band and the Newberry College Oompah Band. Other activities will include a classic car show, children’s rides and crafts, and a culinary stage. The entire family can enjoy a presentation of “The World of Anansi the Spider” by the Columbia Marionette Theatre. Shows are scheduled at 11am, 1:30pm and 3pm at the Ritz Theater. Plenty of free parking is available downtown.

A weekend of special activities is scheduled for the 2012 Newberry College homecoming. The event kicks off with the Festival of Fireworks show at 9pm on October 12. The best viewing spots are on the college campus. The Newberry College 5K Run & Walk will begin at 8am on October 13. The course will wind through the historic downtown area. Pre-registration is $25; fee is $30 on race day. The Newberry College Singers will present a free concert at Wiles Chapel at 1pm. The Homecoming Parade will march down College Street at 2pm. Football kickoff is scheduled for 4pm, when the Newberry College Wolves will take on Wingate University.

Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for children ages 12 and under.
Visitors may want to take in a show at the historic Newberry Opera House while in town. Highlights of the fall schedule include concerts by Nitty Gritty Dirt Band on September 14, Gordon Lightfoot on September 29, and Edwin McCain on October 12. Tickets are available online or through the Newberry Opera House Box Office.
